But friends insist he was well-behaved and had never been in trouble.
Former classmate David Gravel told the Advertiser: "It's heartbreaking. Whoever took the life of a young man in this way is evil.
"He was a good guy. He lived his life and people dislike you when you live your life.
"He was never in trouble and he was never suspended from school. I've lost someone close."
There are now seven floral tributes at the scene of his murder in Sumner Road.
One card left at the scene and signed by 11 people said: "We will always be thinking of you. You will be missed so much.
"You were the joker of the family and your jokes and happy memories will remain with us forever.
"You did not deserve to leave us so early. We guess the angels needed your help more than us."
Friend Kamran Hussain, 22, said: "He was a nice young lad that did not deserve this.
"Most of my mates are 21 or 22 but he was one of the younger lads who used to hang round with us. He was never in trouble.
"He was a happy, fun loving guy who never made any fuss. He was into football, PlayStations and the Internet and was a keen Manchester United fan.
"It's all a terrible shock."
