ADDINGTON High head teacher Tim Davies says the school has "failed" a number of pupils after posting its lowest GCSE results in three years.

Only 35 per cent of pupils left the school last summer with five good GCSEs.

While this met the Government's minimum standard for the percentage achieving five or more A*-C grades, including English and maths, the school is now subject to a council improvement plan.

Speaking to the Advertiser this week Mr Davies said governors are considering whether Addington High should become an academy, possibly in partnership with another school, in an effort to improve standards.

He highlighted the poor performance of girls in an English creative writing paper as the cause of the drop in results, but said the blame should be shouldered by the school rather than the pupils.

He said: "We were very pleased with some of our results but feel disappointed and responsible about English.

"We had a drop when I felt we were going to be at the same level as last year.

"Marks were lost on one paper by students whose coursework and performance in lessons were at C grade level, or in some cases a bit higher.

"We should have been able to get three, four, or even five per cent higher

"That we haven't means we have failed a group of children.

"I think the school does an extremely good job for the vast majority of its pupils, but in terms of these few we believe they should have got C Grades and they didn't, which is our responsibility."

Newly published league tables put Addington High bottom of the pile in Croydon.

Just 35 per cent achieved five or more A*- C grades in 2011, three per cent fewer than the previous year and the lowest since 2008.

Despite poor English results, maths continued to improve and Mr Davies believes the school, in Fairchildes Avenue, can meet the national target when it rises to 40 per cent next year.

While he was reluctant to be drawn on specific details, he admitted a change in structure, including possible academy status, is being considered.

He said: "The school has a number of partnership agreements and governors are looking at how they might want to use these agreements to have greater capacity to improve.

"If we were considering a change of status I think it would be fair to say we would look at doing it in partnership with others, rather than being an academy in our own right.

"I wouldn't say the governors are chasing a particular status. What they recognise is the need to ensure Addington High has the capacity to continue being a school of its community, for its community, while making sure progress is accelerated."

The school currently works with Archbishop Tenison's, in Selsdon, the only other Croydon school which failed to improve its GCSE results last year. It is also in partnership with Ravens Wood School, in Bromley.

Tim Pollard, cabinet member for children, young people and learners, said: "We will always strongly challenge any school that we feel could be doing better and in this case the council has an agreed improvement plan and is supporting and challenging the school to deliver measurable results."

“That could well be true Mistekipling.

Food does play a big part in how we learn, think etc: Maybe they should test children who are supposedly naughty, to see how much fatty junk food they eat, fizzy drinks etc:”

“Please don't vote this comment down, I once had a KFC (back when it was Kentucky Fried Chicken), I ate so much of it that I felt the urge to ms-behave and break things, I believe its called KFC Syndrome, so from then on I can't be in any way responsible or held in account for my comments and actions, so if you vote this comment down then you are discriminating against me for my disability.
Now enough of that, I'm off to steal some cars because my Whimpy Burger Condition demands me to do so, no wait, its KFC syndrome, sorry, there are so many excuses, sorry again I mean so many conditions out there that I loose track which thing I am blaming all my faults on this week

“Time for the two Tims to do the decent thing and resign. The head (and his colleagues) and the Council have let generations of kids down at this school and society is now picking up the pieces.”

“Austism is used as an excuse for every badly behaved child. It's getting tiresome hearing the same excuse; like austism gives children a free pass to behave like ruleless thugs.

15-20 years ago there were none of these excuses and as a society we were better off.”

“There is a simple test here to see if its the school or the kids...

If one week the ONLY kid in the school was yours, would they learn more?
Because if you think they would learn more because of better teacher attention etc due to the rabble not being allowed in that week distracting the staff, then its the kids at fault”

“@nicecity boy. Are we really gonna go down the whole bad parent bating road? Do you spend your spare time shining your pitchfork looking for a new victim to lynch? Your reply is based on speculation and assumptions, hardly the ideals of an educated man.
The facts are quite simple, Addington High has failed to educate its students to an agreed and acceptable national level and for this they are in question. We can indeed blame poor parenting and lack of discipline if that is your preference, but remember this is a generic argument and all schools in the country have this challenge to face. So your argument has little merit unless of course you wish to infer that the area of New Addington is less socially responsible than the rest of the country? (a can of worms I would best leave closed).
OFSTED will no doubt be investigating the performance of this school, or should i have said re-investigating as this has been in the spotlight for some time now for various reasons and there are only so many times it can dodge the bullet.
@homemum. I too have a child with ASD and totally understand the frustration of "generic labeling". I am very lucky to have a wonderful wife who has dedicated her life to loving advancement of our baby, without her selflesness I would be lost.”

“homemum, how many children do you have out of curiosity?

You mention your 8 year old with the learning difficulties and you say "3 of my daughters went to Addington High" so that's 4 already...

Maybe it's hard for kids to learn because there are too many of them in the same household?”

“@mr kipling no backlash i am a reasonable woman, i have one of these so called naughty children she is 8 and has high functioning asd which is an umbrella diagnosis for autism. she has learning difficulties, but that is more to the fact she has a younger learning curve, her diet is monitored very closely, as well as her environment as well, as the parent of my child its very hurtful when she is lumped into a group as 'naughty' It cannot be further from the truth my daughter is not a naughty child she is extremely well behaved and the school she attends describe her as a pleasure to teach.
for all of her difficulties to fit in to the 'real' world i am a very proud mother same as many parents i have met with children like my daughter.
she has another 'disability as although she was not born in New Addington she now lives here which means that constantly we are told we live on one of the worst estates in the south east, Not all people on this estate are raising rioters and criminals in fact the vast majority arent its a few bad apples spoiling the barrel.
Addington high has had a terrible past yr through press and now results, i for one do blame Addington high and its staff for these results because 3 of my daughters have attended,2 present and 1 left in may last yr, the chaos of 2 members of staff suspended and other factors meant that the focus was off pupils in the last yr and on staff issues, many capable and bright students did not leave with the results that were predicted or expected in fact results day was a huge disappointment for many. I as a local mum do not want Addington high closed but i do feel a restructure in the leadership is needed to bring Addington high up to standard which i as a parent feel it isnt. When trying to contact anyone in leadership it is pretty much a case of having to go to the school and stand in reception until someone will see you, calling does not work because calls are never returned, and trying to see the head is never going to happen your always pushed pillar to post. Yes i agree that parents need to encourage their children to be the best they can but if the school is in complete disarray internally, the buck stops with the school”

    “@homemum
To be fair kids now aren't allowed to just be thick anymore, they look at the behaviour and suggest conditions that would explain them.

There is always an outside chance that the kid might be a little **** who has never encountered discipline and has no respect for authority. The best thing for them would be a slap, he doesn't care how many gold stars he has on a chart, he got a new tv to watch in the riots and he set fire to the naughty stair a week earlier

And before you all get on your soap boxes about how suddenly every kid is Autistic now, which I might add, Suddenly everyone is autistic, yet nobody has done a massive investigation to find out what in our environment, food or medical care is causing it, they just said, well from Wednesday these kids have Mild conditions which will explain everything very vaguely, perhaps they need a grant if they tick more than five boxes

I was Dyslexic and got the cane at school, I never behaved like kids currently do because it causes kids to stay on track and learn respect, even if its just respect for whoever holds the cane
In fact now if I were dyslexic and got caned then I would get a massive cash payout in compensation. Funny how it all goes down the pan

    Let the backlash commence”

“Johnnyboy360 something has gone wrong your posts are barely literate! However I do agree it is the pupils who mainly contribute towards the poor results, secondly to them it's the parents who fail to teach their kids anything outside of the school system.

Addington High isn't the best school it is on the Outskirts of one of the worst estates in London, you are hardly going to get a high calibre of student!

I left there 14 yrs ago to continue in Education more than 1/2 of my peers didn't and the kids that are there now are the kids of my peers. What goes around comes around!”
