One passer-by, who did not wish to be named, described a police car and van being parked outside at dawn.

He said: "It's normally quiet at that time of morning and you just have the traffic on the road and buses.

"It's shocking that something like this might have happened at the Black Sheep Bar, it's the last place I would thought.

"Of a night time it is always packed in there, but there never seems to be any trouble."

The Black Sheep Bar is one of the town's most successful bars and has remained popular, despite a downturn in Croydon's night-time economy.

It was runner-up in last year's annual Croydon Best Bar None contest, having gone one better the previous year.

At the time, in 2010, judges were impressed with the club's innovative safety systems, including fingerprint ID scanners to confirm membership and implementing security checks in its toilets.

Police say that no arrests have been made and enquiries are continuing.

The Black Sheep Bar refused to comment when contacted by the Advertiser this week.
