Bass player's TV success
A NEW Addington bass player is hoping to strike the right note on Sunday when he appears in a TV talent show.
Lawrence Insula, of Cator Close, is part of the 16-strong CK Gospel Choir, which has made the semi-final of Must Be The Music on Sky One.
The group are aiming to impress the voting public and make it through to the live final at Wembley Arena.
Lawrence, 22, said: "It's all been a little bit surreal. One minute I'm at the audition stage and then the next minute I'm watching myself on television.
"The reason we're so good at what we do is we're able to switch it up.
"So where the judges were expecting us to do a gospel number, we sang Stevie Wonder's 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered'.
"They were just like 'wow, we weren't expecting that'."
The judging panel is made up of musicians Jamie Cullum, Dizzee Rascal and Sharleen Spiteri.
The ultimate winner will take away £100,000.
CK Gospel was formed in 2007 and has grown from 10 to 16 core members.
They rehearse across London and put a "gospel twist on soul, pop, jazz and classical".
Lawrence said: "It's actually great. You might expect there to be some egos with members saying 'I've got more experience than you'.
"But we are like a family. I know that mind sound like a bit of a cliche but it is the truth.
"We get together and we bounce ideas off each other."
Lawrence is studying for an architecture degree at London South Bank University.
He would like to become an architect, but for now is enjoying his moment in the spotlight.
Looking to the show on Sunday, Lawrence added: "I'm feeling confident.
"What we're trying to do is make people happy.
"It's a difficult time for everybody in the country and across the world.
"If we can come along and bring a bit of sunshine then that's a good job."
CK Gospel Choir will be hoping to go one step further than a band made up of Brit School students who also made the semi-final stage.
Chakula Soul, whose members attend the school in The Crescent, Selhurst, lost out in a public vote last month.
Must Be The Music is due to be screened on Sky One on Sunday from 7pm
