Battling Harriers take third
CROYDON Harriers' senior women's team rounded off their Southern Women's league campaign with a third place finish on a difficult afternoon in Exeter, writes Matthew Kiernan.
Although failing to register a top two A-string finish, the embattled Croydon squad fought hard all day against tough competition in the four-club fixture.
Rachel Bayliss led the way with a 26.92-metre throw in the hammer for third, while Serena Phillips (21.06m) topped the B event standings.
Further third places came courtesy of sprinters Whitney Campbell (100m, 14.1secs), Amy Dowsett (200m, 29.3) and Charlotte Campbell (100m hurdles, 19.9).
Jenny Beecroft enjoyed a season's best in the 3,000m with a time of 12 minutes 26.2 seconds, while Miriam D'Souza displayed mental toughness to complete the 400m, 800m, 1,500m, 3,000m and a leg of the 4x400m. Linda Harrison threw a new lifetime best of 13.91m in the javelin to complete the Croydon contingent.
The result saw Croydon finish 11th overall out of the 19 clubs in Division Three.
CROYDON Harriers' Martyn Rooney successfully anchored the European 4x400m relay team to a silver medal in 2:59.84sec, 0.84secs behind the United States in Split, Croatia on Sunday.
TRINITY School's Joe Yarde and Elliot Safo both represented London in the UK School Games at Gateshead last weekend. Yarde fought well for fourth in the 100m hurdles in 13.41 and Safo finished fifth in the long jump (6.58m).
Jacob Paul (Wilson's) was second in the 400m hurdles in 54.60 while South London Harrier Josh Street (St Joseph's) was narrowly defeated, taking silver over 400m in 48.42.
