FABIO Capello's England squad are not the only precious cargo to have landed in South Africa over the last week.

The Green Party collected 1,488 books from its local members, which are heading to South African schools.

Gordon Ross, who was a parliamentary candidate for the Greens in Croydon South in May, hopes the books will help some of the country's poorest children.

He said: "I wanted to do something to help, but didn't think I'd be able to do much good on my own. So I searched online for a charity and discovered one which sent books to schools which, at present, simply don't have any. I was surprised how many we collected."

Charity Community Heart, which provides health education, training and resources to people in South Africa, will distribute the books.

“Just want to correct something in the article.
The shipment of books is sent by sea, not by air.
Sending them by air wouldn't be very Green.”
