adulation: Sutton United's Steve Watts milks the applause after his winner against Ashford Town last Saturday Picture by Paul Loughlin
Having edged to a 1-0 victory at Ashford Town last Saturday, courtesy of Steve Watts' second half strike, the U's overturned Boreham Wood on their own patch on Tuesday night.
After Sam Gargan had put Sutton ahead, the crucial second goal was scored by Bradley Woods- Garness, who was prominent on his return to the starting 11 after a loan spell at Hendon.
The visitors dominated proceedings on what was probably the best playing surface in the division and broke through on 27 minutes.
Billy Hawes whipped in a low cross that was met by Gargan at the near post and, although goalkeeper Tony Tucker blocked his effort, the Sutton forward scrambled the ball over the line.
Gargan headed another effort wide and James Hawes had a low shot stopped by Tucker before U's doubled the lead six minutes before half-time. Jason Goodliffe's header put Woods-Garness clear and he held off a defender before lifting the ball past Tucker as he came out.
Anthony Joseph's blistering run down the right ended with a cross that Bradley Fraser nearly sliced into his own net.
Inih Effiong twice went close for the home side, blazing over the bar on each occasion, and could have been sent off eight minutes from time when he clattered into Billy Hawes having already been booked.
But the referee saw nothing wrong and with Hawes off the pitch receiving treatment, Effiong turned a cross from the right past Kevin Scriven.
In a tense finish, Fraser's shot from 10 yards out hit the underside of the bar and was cleared.
Sutton (v Boreham Wood): Scriven, Hawes, Bray, Goodliffe, Hawes, Cobbs, Hann, Quarm, Gargan (Watts), Phillips (Joseph), Woods-Garness (Taylor). Unused subs: El-Salahi, McKimm.
