Boris: New trams more Jaguar than Mondeo
THE borough's new trams were given the mayoral seal of approval on Wednesday.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson inspected the first of six new trams, which are being added to the fleet as part of a £16million investment.
The mayor boarded one of the new Swiss-made trams as it went on a trial run along the test tracks at the Therapia Lane Depot.
The mayor said the new tram, which was made in Germany by the Swiss manufacturer Stadler, was "brilliant".
He said: "It's like the difference between a Jaguar and a Ford Mondeo. But more importantly, it is a sign of confidence in Croydon. This project alone produces another 20 jobs, but also makes people's journey to work more comfortable, faster, more efficient."
As well as being 2.5m longer than existing trams, the new models are air-conditioned and have a 100 per cent low floor, offering better accessibility for passengers.
Six of the new models will be rolled out in Croydon by the summer, with the possibility of a further eight in the future, said Mr Johnson.

“Actually cannot wait for these new ones to get in service! I know its nothing to get excited about, but I genuinely am excited! They look really good! Anybody know an exact date or a possible rumored date they start? Would love to jump on one!”

“What a shame that Jaguar's are commonly known as a fancy packing case for a Mondeo!!
Look in a Jag, and see how many parts are shared with other fords, Mainly Mondeos.”
