Surrey cricketer Mark Butcher has announced his retirement today.

The news, emanating from Surrey's annual visit to Whitgift School, comes just a few weeks short of the former England batsman's 37th birthday.

The one-club player has been struggling with a knee injury all season.

He had a minor operation to remove some cartilage a fortnight ago with a view to returning to the county team by September.

Former England Test player Butcher has turned out for Old Mid Whitgiftians in the Surrey Championship Division Two this season in order to regain his fitness.
