KEVIN Burnett enjoyed a golden day at the Surrey Masters Championships in Ewell as he won seven medals.

Striders of Croydon's oldest competitor collected five gold medals and two silvers, winning the over-70 100 metres (20.1 seconds), 200m (41.5), shot (6.72 metres), discus (19.08m) and heavy hammer (7.68m).

He also placed second in the hammer (18.83) and javelin (17.33). Five of his performances were club over-70 records. Striders' middle-distance coach Alan Dolton won gold in the over-50 800m (2:44.4) and 1500 metres (5:41.1).

Striders also produced some good performances in their first Southern Veterans League match of the season at Croydon Arena on Monday. Both their men and women finished fourth of the seven competing clubs.

Steve Starvis won the over-35 1500m (4mins 38.2secs) while Lee Flanagan placed second in the 400m in a club over-35 record of 57.6secs and Alan Dolton was second in the over-50 1500m (5:25.7).

Bob Ewen placed second in the 2000m walk in a club over-55 record of 11:55.7, with Dave Hoben second in the B event (13:14.5).

Steph Upton set a women's club record of 13:12.1 in the 2000m walk, finishing third, while Margaret Faherty set club over-60 records in the 100m (20.2) and 1500m (7:13.8).

Striders of Croydon's women produced an excellent team performance to win their Rosenheim League match last Wednesday evening (May 26).

Their total of 21 points placed them ahead of Serpentine (19), Belgrave (17), Croydon Harriers (16), Hercules-Wimbledon (8) and Herne Hill (6).

Striders had gone into the last event, the 4 x 200-metre relay, in third place but Josephine Thompson, Alice Ewen, Steph Upton and Natalie Osher stormed to victory in 2mins 16.4secs, well clear of their rivals from Serpentine.

Striders' best individual performance came from the youngest member of the team, Victoria Ewen, who placed second in the javelin with a club women's record of 18.21 metres.

Thompson showed her versatility with third in the 3000 metres (12mins 44.5secs) and second in the B 100 metres (15.9secs), while Osher was third in the A 100 metres (16.2) and Upton was fourth in the high jump (1.05m).

Striders' men were unable to match their women's success and finished sixth, two points behind Hercules-Wimbledon. Their leading points-scorer was Ryan Phillips.
