Byron Primary School to become an Oasis academy
BYRON Primary School is to become an academy sponsored by Oasis Community Learning, the Advertiser can reveal.
Governors decided in favour of the move at a meeting last Thursday, after more than a year of talks with the trust and with parents.
The Reverend Steve Chalke, founder and head of Oasis Community Learning, said the planned date for the conversion was September this year.
The move will mean the school on Stoneyfield Road working more closely with Oasis Academy Coulsdon.
Mr Chalke said: "The schools can share facilities, and if parents choose to send their children to the secondary school, there are many benefits to continuity in education."
The school was rated "good" by Ofsted in July last year, up from "satisfactory" in 2007.
Councillor Terry Lenton, vice-chair of the school's governors, said they hoped Oasis's backing would help the school go from strength to strength.
She said: "It is great to see the strong ethos of Oasis Academy and we thought that would be an ideal way for Byron."
The school was closed for half-term last week, but more details are expected next week.

“let's hope it can do better than the Ashburton infants and juniors which was taken over by Oasis, as there results are appalling !
Its not always about money, it's the quality of teachers and the discipline that's counts....
You can throw all the money you like at theses schools, but the fact is they won't improve without a strong ethos of a disciplined school with a* teachers...”
