CRYSTAL Palace fell to a 2-1 defeat at league leaders Cardiff City this afternoon.

It all started superbly for the visitors, who took an early lead thanks to captain Mile Jedinak, but they were pegged back by Craig Noone's close range shot before the break.

And in a poor second half for Ian Holloway's men, they conceded to Aron Gunnarsson's powerful header on 73 minutes to throw away at least point.

With Damien Delaney suspended, Danny Gabbidon came in for his first Palace start against his former club, while Dean Moxey began at left-back and Jonathan Parr switched to right-back in place of the injured Joel Ward.

The Eages got off to a fantastic start after just four minutes when Jedinak lost his marker in the box and fired home Owen Garvan's corner from 12-yards out after good work from Yannick Bolasie to win the set-piece initially.

Malky Mackay's side mustered their first chance of the match after 17 minutes when former Brighton & Hove Albion winger Noone fired wide from the edge of the box, but the visitors should have doubled their lead midway through the half on three separate occasions.

First, Glenn Murray found himself through on goal after Parr's clearance, but the striker's first touch let him down and allowed goalkeeper David Marshall to collect.

Then Wilfried Zaha cut in from the left, dinked past two defenders and curled an effort towards top corner but struck the crossbar, while Garvan was denied by Marshall after curling a free-kick over the Cardiff wall.

Craig Bellamy was then denied an equaliser after finding himself through on goal but Peter Ramage got back to put the frontman off for a corner.

Referee Gibbs seemed to frustrate both sides throughout the half with some strange decisions, which saw both Zaha and Bolasie receive bookings, while Cardiff's next chance fell to Jordan Mutch from outside the box, but the midfielder shot woefully wide.

However, the hosts were back on level terms a minute before the break when Bellamy beat Parr down the left and cut the ball back for Noone to smash the ball home past Julian Speroni.

Murray blazed an effort over inside the box as the Eagles looked for an instant response, while the final action of the first period fell to Jedinak, who curled a free-kick over the wall but Marshall held well.

Bellamy should have put Cardiff in front just before the hour mark but he was foiled by Speroni from close range, while the Welshman went close soon after by hitting the post, only to be flagged offside.

Zaha thought he should have had a penalty minutes later after beating his marker, while Bolasie dragged a scissor kick wide from inside the box after getting ahead of Hudson.

Cardiff substitute Aron Gunnarsson sent a header wide from a Peter Whittingham free-kick midway through the second period, but the attacking midfielder made amends shortly after when he headed home from a corner to put Mackay's side in front.

Parr then went into the book for a late foul on Noone, while Andre Moritz entered the fray with 15 minutes to go for Bolasie, who was walking a tightrope from his earlier booking.

Whittingham nearly added a third after 78 minutes when he clipped the top of the crossbar direct from a free-kick, while Kagisho Dikgacoi entered the referee's notebook for dissent.

Palace battled for an equaliser but they had hardly deserved it after a poor second half showing, summed up by Gabbidon's wasterful shot over the bar from way outside the box with five minutes remaining.

Jermaine Easter came on for Parr in a bid to get something out of the game, but Cardiff were comfortable in the end and probably deserved to take all three points, but only just based on their second half performance.

The Eagles travel to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Palace: Speroni, Parr (Easter 87), Moxey, Gabbidon, Ramage, Dikgacoi, Jedinak (c), Garvan, Bolasie (Moritz 74), Zaha, Murray.

Subs Not Used: Price, Martin, O'Keefe, Williams, Appiah.

Attendance: 26,098

“Can't take you serious any more JohnnyBoy.

If the red kit doesn't bother you, and you have no animosity towards Swansea then you can't be a real Cardif fan. Probably started supporting them when the new foreign money came along. Who was it before, Man United? Maybe that's why the red kit is ok with you.

Now run along now back to your welsh mates and w**k over how amazing cardif are.”

“"nicecityboy" So what are the excuses this time round for failing to win again? Dodgy ref perhaps, cheating Forest players?

That's just 1 win for you in the last 8!

9 points adrift of Cardiff now, so who's bottling it now?

And I am a Cardiff Season Ticket Holder, I live near Swansea now though, and have a lot of Swansea friends so much of the animosity towards Swansea has gone, for me that is anyway and I am glad they are doing well.

And a change of kit certainly does not bother me, it's superficial, red is only a colour, we've had a red kit before away, I'm fine about playing at home in it, it's doing us no harm now is it? Happy to move with the times and move forward, unlike Palace, another year in the Championship for them me thinks.

And Palace should play in yellow I guess, goes with their yellow bellies underneath.

    Tally-ho!”

“Jackanory the improvement started with the appointment of a New Director on the board & also Craig Fleming, The two combined contributed to the improvement of the team, which since Ian took over has changed, as always stated by everyone why change the way we were playing the players knew the training regime the same as the directors surely they must have had a word in his ear. You do not change a winning formula.”

    “Guys,
the thing is can we go up & if we do we will always be the yo-yo club of going going straight back down?
Let`s try & get there if we can this season.

Nobody, not even the resident jester from the village knows why Freedman left, he improved the team with his signings, he improved the performances, he had to, who knows what went through the boards thoughts, we`ve heard they wanted Coppell back, who knows, something must have been whispered in Dougie`s ear to improve the way we were playing.

We are still 4th going into the new year, maybe we have punched above our weight but when you witness beating Brighton 3-0 & playing them off the park, yes we certainly can beat any team in this league & Holloway will hopefully bring some much needed quality in the new year, we`ve certainly got the funds to boost the squad, there is no excuse.

Parish, get that cheque book out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

“Sharpeyed I have already stated what you have just stated in the blogs when we drew with Huddersfield,That Ian Hollway has never sustained a club for long enough to be promoted outright, Also when we were looking for a new manager I suggested a few, note Sean O'Driscoll is available now he know how to play attacking atractive football perhaps he could be joint manager, all you have to do is look where Notts Forest are now & where they were when he took over. Why has Holloway not included APPIAH next to Murray perhaps we do not need to go looking for fresh faces when we have O'Keefe. Williams , Appiah & Others we might have players like Liverpool have found which could play but are not being tried?.”

“Holloway will prove to be a one trick pony, just like Dowie. He is an egotist ,above all else.
Whatever possessed CPFC to give him such a long contract, when we had the ideal man on our doorstep...Kenny Jacket.
Palace will never sustain Premiership football, but with someone like Jacket we would always be knocking on the door to return.”

    “NiceCityboy,
i think your honest comment has put ***** in his place, hopefully he will get more joy gloating on the ************** site.
The form of the Palace is worrying at the moment but we are still 4th, every Fan must be happy at that after the start we had under Freedman playing dire negative football that just carried on from last season.
New manager in Holloway, new coaches, new training methods, we have seen we can beat any team in the Championship on our good days, we must start closing games out & winning them because our football at times is fantastic & we must convert our superior possession & chances we create into goals, we have look tired & laboured of late & hopefully a few quality signings will freshen up the squad.
Happy New Year to all the Lads & Lasses on here & hopefully it`s a good 1 for the Palace!!!!!”

“"I am very glad that Swansea are in the Premiership" - Are you sure you are a cardiff fan John?

Our current form - we have lost 2 out of the last 21 matches. If you isolate the last 7 then yes we are having a dip in form but don't worry yours in yet to come, as always, at the most crucial time of the season.

Palace bottling it? Not quite, at the beginning of the season we lost our first 3 matches and were at the foot of the championship. At that time most rational Palace fans who actually went and witnessed the games live had little hope for this season and relegation was certainly a possibility.

After some late transfers including the sales of Ambrose and Scannell and aquisitions of Bolasie, Delaney, Ward, Moritz (have I forgotten any?), things changed. We are possibly punching above our weight but a few smart inbound transfers next month and who knows.

By the way we spent less than we earned through the above deals, unlike your joke of a club who not only sold their soul to a bunch of Malaysians, also did very little to stop the "rebrand" and change of kit colour. How ironic "The Bluebirds" playing in a red kit with a red dragon on their badge. LOL. Over a century of the club's history disappeared due to greed! Pathetic club. I would rather watch Palace in league 2 than have our club sold and rebranded like yours.”
