TWO Croydon Harriers struck gold in the 200m at the South of England Indoor Championships at Lee Valley last weekend, writes Matthew Kiernan.

Ashleigh Clarke took the spoils in the U15s girls 200m standings, clocking the fastest time in the UK this year for her age-group, 26 minutes and one second.

Twinelle Hopeson also won the senior women's event, achieving the UK's fourth fastest time.

Elsewhere, three silvers were found in the 60m sprint hurdles for Kertis Beswick (U17s men), Shirin Irving (U17s women) and Joe Yarde (U20s men).

The club's tally was completed with four bronzes – Eleanor Smith-Hahn (U17s women, 200m), Cameron Smith (U20s men, 60m) and Marcelle Rowe (U15s boys, 200m and 400m).

Croydon won two more individual medals at the Surrey schools cross-country championships at Priory Park, Reigate.

Peter Chambers struck silver in the showpiece senior boys' event, clocking 23.07 for the undulating 6.5km course.

Mark Plackett followed soon after in fourth (23.36) with a well-timed run, with Dom Nolan in close contention in fifth (23.47).

The trio now represent Surrey at the English Schools championships in Somerset in March.

Holly Haile took bronze in the hotly-contested intermediate girls' race.

Stevie Lawrence also put herself in the frame to join her training partner at the English Schools after finishing eighth.

Josh Haasz, (11th in Intermediate Boys), Patrick Lucas (12th in Intermediate Boys) and Charlie Brackenborough (11th in Junior Boys) were among the other top 15 finishers.
