THE CLOSURE of the current New Addington Library is "not far off", it was confirmed this week.

Croydon councillor Sara Bashford said it would not be long before the current building on Central Parade is closed and moved into the Calat building.

But the councillor, who acts as the council's cabinet member for customer services, stated she could not guarantee the same number of available books would be transferred over despite promising the new home would "offer the same level of service".

She said: "No plans have been finalised and I cannot give a date but it is not long off.

"We will be moving the library into the Calat, that is the plan at the moment. To shut the current building which is quite old and getting to the end of its useful life.

"There is some work being done in the Calat at the moment and there are plans to have adult education, job centre advice and the library in there so it all fits in nicely together.

"The library will have all the same services as it does at the moment."

But when asked if the new building will house the same number of books as it does presently, Mrs Bashford said she could not make any promises.

"I could not say there will be the same number of books definitely," she explained.

"We do not know what the square footage available will be in comparison with the library.

"These are all things we are looking into at the moment.

"When we have exact plans we will talk to residents and find out what works best for them."

“I guess with all the information available on the internet now, librarys are just a thing of the past now. Shame though.”

“I remember the joy as a young person walking into a library and finding a book that you wanted to read, my children and granchildren all got great pleasure from going to the library to get another book to read Once again the old saying comes to mind "they know the cost of everything but know the value of nothing".”

“It would be beneficial for the Council to share this information as soon as possible - better before the event than afterwards please.

Before panic erupts as to the 'number of books' please remember specific books can be requested all the time and obtained by Library staff, especially if particular titles are needed/wanted. If the rest of the services remain unaffected and have enough room to be carried out - let's hope this will be a good move.”
