ATHLETICS: Stefan Amokwandoh has put his improvement in triple jump down to a winter of specialist training with John Vernon.

Whitgift School pupil Amokwandoh leapt 13.18 metres to win the U17 Surrey Schools' title and give himself another chance at national gold.

The 15-year-old won U15 gold at the English Schools Championships last summer, with very little actual tuition on triple jump beforehand, with a leap of 12.93.

Now, the teenager's best is 13.44 and he is ranked seventh in the UK already at U17 level, with many of his rivals a year older than him.
