Community award for caring schoolgirl
THERE is little time for Elizabeth Peters to indulge in dancing, singing or any of the other pastimes most 12-year-olds enjoy.
Because the nature lover spends her free time clearing up woodland and rescuing sick animals.
The Oasis Academy Coulsdon pupil picked up her school's Greatest Contribution to a Community award for helping clear Bradmore Green pond.
Elizabeth, who has aspirations of becoming a vet, battled horrendous weather during the clean up and even rescued a sick terrapin, who she named Max.
She said: "I wanted to volunteer to clear the pond because I love nature.
"People don't understand if they drop litter near the pond the ducks could eat it and their feet could become tangled in weeds which can hurt them."
Sadly, Elizabeth, who owns a dog, a cat and 13 fish, was left deeply upset when rescued terrapin Max died.
The schoolgirl, from Barnsfield Close, Old Coulsdon, said: "Unfortunately, Max died a short time after he was rescued but if I ever find a sick animal I always take it home to look after it."
Elizabeth is committed to saving the environment and always opts for cycling instead of taking a bus or getting a lift in a car.
And the youngster has strong words for those who litter the countryside.
She said: "I think people who drop their litter are terrible because they can cause so many problems."
Elizabeth picked up a certificate in a special ceremony after winning the school award.
Oasis Academy's Marion Jones said: "Elizabeth showed great community spirit .
"We are all incredibly proud of her."
