SOME 1,500 signatures have been collected calling for a pedestrian crossing on Church Road in Upper Norwood.

Graham Axford, who is standing to become a Liberal Democrat councillor for the Upper Norwood ward at the May 6 local elections, wants to see a new crossing placed between the old Gala bingo hall and the Westow Street junction.

Mr Axford believes the road is too dangerous to cross outside rush hour when there are fewer cars on the road.

He said: "You've got elderly residents trying to cross and they are trying to open up a cinema at the old bingo hall so you will get more crossing."

Mr Axford spent around 11 hours gathering the signatures and will hand them in to Croydon Council.

He added: "Whether I get elected or not I'm going to still fight for this."
