Crackdown on tramlink troubles
FIVE arrests were made following a police crackdown on antisocial behaviour across Croydon's Tramlink network last Friday.
British Transport Police (BTP) Special Constables – along with full-time officers from the BTP's Croydon response team – conducted a plainclothes initiative from 6.30pm to midnight as part of Operation Nacho.
BTP Special Police Constable Ben Clifford said: "We launched the operation to combat people travelling without valid tickets, drinking alcohol, using illegal substances and generally being abusive to passengers and staff.
"This sort of behaviour makes people feel uncomfortable and unsafe in what is otherwise a very safe environment."
During the operation a 23-year-old man from Croydon and a 22-year-old man from Thornton Heath both received warnings for possession of cannabis.
A 22-year-old man from Tadworth was arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour, a 20-year-old man from Lewisham was arrested and received a penalty notice for disorder, and an 18-year-old man from Croydon received a caution for travelling without a valid ticket.
Tramlink revenue staff also issued 66 penalty fares to passengers without valid tickets and a further 12 penalty fares were paid in cash on the spot.
