Croydon Athletic's future in doubt as manager and assistant walk out
CRISIS club Croydon Athletic suffered a new blow at the weekend with the resignation of manager Tim O'Shea and his assistant Neil Smith.
The Rams manager delivered an emotional farewell message to supporters following the 3-1 home defeat to Concord Rangers last Saturday, with former manager Ken Fisher appointed as caretaker boss.
O'Shea and Smith's departure came barely a week after Croydon Athletic's owner Mazhar Majeed was alleged to be involved with an international cricket match-fixing scam. Majeed has since been arrested and released on bail twice - once in connection with the fixing claims made in a national newspaper and once relating to allegations of money laundering.
With the club's owner's future involvement remaining uncertain, and with the August wages of the players and management still unpaid, O'Shea and his assistant have called time on their two-year tenure that culminated in the Rams' promotion to the Ryman Premier Division.
As Croydon Athletic battle to safeguard their future, they have postponed Tuesday night's league game at Tooting & Mitcham and their home game with Sutton United on September 18. It is likely the Rams FA Cup tie at home to Kingstonian on Sunday will also be postponed, although this is yet to be confirmed.
