HE'S ELECTRIC: Council leader Mike Fisher
In a move which it says will encourage greater use of electric cars, the council is planning to install charging points into up to seven of its car parks.
Funding for the installation, which could run to £60,000, is coming from the South West London Transport Conference and Transport for London.
The proposals fit neatly with the Mayor of London's long-term ambition to see 100,000 power points made available across the capital.
They have been given backing by the council's traffic management cabinet committee.
Already earmarked are two points at both the Wandle Road surface car park in central Croydon and in Purley High Street's car park, plus one each at Spices Yard car park, off South End, South Croydon, and Lion Green Road car park, in Coulsdon.
Providing survey work throws up no problems the council also intends to provide two points at the Jubilee Bridge car park at Reeves Corner, Croydon, and one each in car parks in Sanderstead Road, Sanderstead, and in Russell Hill Place, Purley.
No price has yet been fixed for using the points but parking will be limited to four hours.
Mike Fisher, leader of the council, said: "We are keen to encourage a greater use of electric vehicles.
"We have chosen these sites to judge the response and iron out any problems and then decide whether we want to install more around the borough."

“¿Already earmarked are TWO points at the Wandle Road surface car park in central Croydon" - how very generous of the council! This "car park" is for the exclusive use of 950 council staff only, between 0700 and 1600 Mon - Fri and then for lesser mortals that is the public, at all other times!
Why doesn¿t this council use the old stumped lampposts, (kindly supplied by the last one) as charging points in central Croydon?”

“The bays will have a 2hr max parking time and your car will take 7hrs to charge.
But the council can tick the pro-eco box”
