Lawrence Okoye has broken the British discus record for the second summer running.

The former Whitgift School pupil, aged 20, threw 68.24 metres in Halle, Germany, today.

The Croydon Harriers Athletics Club member's throw would have been good enough for silver in last year's World Championships.

However, today he finished third in the competition, behind World Champion Robert Harting (Germany, 70.31m) and Piotr Malachowski (Poland, 68.94m), the reigning Olympic silver medallist.

Last season, after just winter dedicated solely to discus, Okoye started his first season with the senior discus weight by throwing 63.25 metres at Kingston in the Surrey Championships.

He threw further than that only once last year - 67.63 to break one of the longest-standing records in British athletics.

This season, he had already thrown the Olympic Games qualifying A standard 65 metres twice - 66.67 and 66.25 - while spending a month training and throwing in America.

After winning the European U23s title in Ostrava last summer, he missed out on selection for the World Athletics Championships because other throwers were deemed more consistent.
