Croydon MP's mental health Bill becomes law
CROYDON Central MP Gavin Barwell's legislation on mental health officially passes into law today (Friday).
The Mental Health (Discrimination) Bill aims to break down barriers that infringe the rights of people with mental health problems, and bars them from participating in jury service or becoming a company director.

It also changes a law which stipulates MPs will lose their seats if they are sectioned under the Mental Health Act for more than six months, even if they make a full recovery.
Three leading organisations – the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and mental health charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness – have backed the legislation.

Paul Farmer, chief executive of Mind, said: "This is a hugely important day for anyone affected by mental health problems and a watershed moment for attitudes to mental health."
Mr Barwell said: "To our shame, the law still discriminates against those with a mental health condition.
"As well as stopping this, the Bill sends a clear message from Parliament that discrimination is wrong: that people have a right to be judged as individuals, not labelled or stereotyped.
"As a society we still have a long way to go to tackle the forms of discrimination and the inequalities that people with mental illness face."
Meanwhile, Croydon South MP Richard Ottaway's Scrap Metal Dealers Bill – an attempt to crack down on the scourge of metal theft – has also become an Act of Parliament.

“@John_Croydon: Well said. Too many Mental Health staff are actually dangerous and are better suited to Prison work.
Myself & South London & Maudsley are working on fixing this very big issue ( along with Hear Us & the usual suspects ), but it is a big job and will take time.

@British_Tony: I think it's safe to say yelling racist abuse at people won't make you any friends. And her victims have rights as well. I genuinely hope she receives the appropriate medical care to help her recover from her paranoia about foreigners and this bizarre 'invasion' fantasy that permeates the ranks of The Far Right. It is a delusion ( it's definitely not real ), and I hope you all recover.”

“Never been a Barwell fan, but well done for this. I have a close family member with mental health problems and the stigma is atrocious. John_Croydon, I seldom have anything good to say about Mayday, but in this case I must agree with you. A few times I have been there with my relative and been amazed at their empathy and care. Sadly there will always be those with prejudices which is terribly sad, we can all imagine what a broken leg feels like but it's impossible to feel what it is like to be inside the brain of a depressed person unless you've been there yourself.”

“There are two points I think are worth making.
Firstly, although Gavin Barwell's politics aren't my own, I applaud him for this important step towards understanding and equality. I have met him to discuss the stigma that still surrounds mental health and I came away feeling that he has both understanding and empathy regarding the issues that we sufferers face.
Secondly, I hope that people realise there is still a long way to go. People here regularly complain about the Croydon University Hospital but, trust me, my experience of the Mayday are a hundred times better than my experience of the Bethlem. Unfortunately, many of those who work in mental health have little understanding of the subject and have ended up seeing it as an issue of control rather than being open, empathic and helping sufferers to achieve a decent quality of life. The good news - or at least the best hope - is that there are a few outstanding people who are prepared to risk engaging with their patients, who know how to listen, and who care.
So, well done Gavin - today is a good day. But, to those whose minds are still closed (I like the word 'psychosclerosis'... a hardening of the mind), dare to overcome your prejudices, take the risk of actually finding out, and understand that mental health and mental well-being affects everyone.”

“To Chris Wilcox, Emma West has been treated far worse than Vandell Brooks by the police, Crown persecution service, the media and her MP. Whether or not she has broken the law will be established in a court of law. (Happy St David's Day)”

“@British_Tony: Even if you have Mental Health problems you are not allowed to hurt people or break the law.”

“If Gavin wishes to be taken seriously on this subject he should take down his blog article entitled "its people like this we could do without in this country" where he attacks bipolar sufferer Emma West.”

“One of the few good things The Torys have done for the Ill & Infirm. Everything else they are doing is pretty barbaric.
And injuries are high in the disabled camp due to Tory policy. Moving us 'back to work' is NOT a good idea. We're disabled for a reason, and it's about time these idiot Torys realised this.

Survival of the fittest. An act of barbarism from a party that belongs back in the stone-age. And just look at the bodycount. 30 dead per week. That's nothing to be proud of.
Something Vidhi Mohan should remember the next time he yells 'get a job' at a poor person.”
