When it comes to drinking I think it would be fair to say that I am more of a partaker than a spectator. As fun as it is to watch I definitely like to be part of the action.

However, I found myself in a very sobering situation just last Thursday after getting the 11.41pm back from the city. Otherwise known as the drunk o'clock train. Having never boarded this train in a sober state it was quite an experience.

You could be fooled in to thinking that a train leaving London this late during the week wouldn't be too busy. You'd be wrong. The train was actually heaving. So much so that a woman took it upon herself to sit on me. Literally. As moving as the gesture was it was actually quite painful. Even more so being that she was actually incapable of removing herself.

And then there was the singing. As partial I am to the odd bit of karaoke, this really was something else. Behind me I could hear slurs of some kind of football anthem and in the carriage in front a lady had clearly decided to follow suit and began belting out some kind of Celine Dion atrocity.

Then there were the visuals. At least four people in sight were out to the count and I was also exposed to slightly more than I should have been by a young lady sitting opposite in a somewhat shorter than usual skirt.

But the most amusing moment came on departing the train as I walked past a middle-aged, suited man in specs. Seemingly very professional and well-spoken this man had clearly not wanted the party to end and had even gone to the trouble of taking a beer on board. Not to be deterred by sober civilians the man had taken it upon himself to strike up a conversation with a young Asian man in a post office uniform sitting next to him. After spending such an intimate 15 minutes together the balding man seemed nothing short of devastated to find that the post office worker had to get off at East Croydon. So much so that he shook his hand, then hugged him, and then insisted on taking his number so they could meet again.

Perhaps boarding the drunk o'clock train sober is the way forward.

A true comedy journey of fun.
