There aren't many things in life that I'll openly admit to being good at. One thing I seem to have refined to a fine art however, is the ability to embarrass myself.. lots.

I'd say it's less of a talent and more of an art, and unfortunately is one that seems to feature on most of my nights out. You see, in the past I would put my cringe-worthy experiences down to too much drinking and assumed that alcohol was to blame for my innate ability to look stupid. But apparently not. As this weekend's embarrassing incident followed exactly zero alcohol whatsoever.

It all started with a bar crawl, which despite my initial enthusiasm I managed to be late for. Three hours and six bars late to be precise. And although I was slightly disappointed to miss the start of the proceedings I decided this was actually a good thing and would put me in good stead to last throughout the day.

Admittedly, when I first arrived I did become quickly aware of my soberness within the group but it was all fine. Just fine. So I ordered in my first drink and took a trip to the ladies. It was on my journey back when the embarrassing incident occurred. It seemed I had somehow lost the ability to climb stairs at the halfway point and found myself falling upwards in quite a dramatic fashion. It was not good. Not least because the bar was heaving with people and I was on full display to all. But also because I seemed to have literally fallen in to my drink.

Not only was my face completely soaked but I somehow seemed to have inhaled so much liquid through my nose that I could barely breathe. The people around me who were laughing and jeering at my misfortune did little to help.

If I had been six drinks down the line like everyone else maybe this kind of slip up (literally!) could be justified. It would still be far from ideal but at least I could take comfort in the belief that in the normal course of things this would not have happened. However, this was the normal course of things and this had happened. I had little choice but to pick myself up, take my empty glass to the bar and move on... after all, bar number seven was waiting.
