Mr Hawkins' family were too upset to comment. Neighbour and town councillor Peter Cowie said: "He was a great chap and very happy. All the neighbours are shocked and upset."

Mr Hawkins joined the police in Croydon on November 5, 2001. His Metropolitan Police boss praised him for his hard work and dedication.

Borough commander Chief Superintendent David Musker said: "I was extremely saddened to hear the devastating news of Julian's death, as was everyone here at Croydon who knew him as a colleague and as a friend.

"He was a fine constable and will be sorely missed by us and the community that he served for more than ten years.

"Our thoughts and best wishes are with Julian's wife, children and family in this very difficult time."

Deputy Croydon borough commander Superintendent Rob Atkin added: "He was an extremely hardworking and dedicated officer as part of the Selhurst Safer Neighbourhoods team in Croydon. Julian's death will be deeply felt both by his colleagues that worked with him and knew him as a friend and also by the community that held him in such high regard."
