A CELEBRATION of black culture in Croydon is well under way – and continues with a series of events this week.

October is Black History Month, with members of the borough's diverse communities celebrating the contributions of African and Caribbean people to British history at a series of events.

A range of different groups and societies which represent black and minority ethnic groups have been involved in book readings, talks, plays, dance classes, sports matches and music concerts that will continue until the end of October.

Onyekwere Uzoma Ogueri, manager of CMG (Care Management) in Parchmore Road, which supports nearly 600 people with learning disabilities, said: "Black History Month not only gives us all the opportunity to celebrate black history and culture, but also to celebrate what is great about Croydon. The amazing mix of people and cultures make Croydon a brilliant place to live and work."

He added: "We're passionate about encouraging people to experience different histories and cultures and get more involved in the community."

Earlier this month, more than 100 CMG service users and staff enjoyed a day of African and Asian singing and dancing, an array of home-cooked foods and a fashion show, with styles from both the past and present.

Mayor of Croydon Graham Bass, who was in attendance, said: "Events like this do a great deal to increase people's awareness of the richness of black history and culture."

Local libraries have also done their bit to promote Black History Month, while the leisure centres in Thornton Heath and South Norwood have a variety of free classes on offer, including basketball, zumba and street dance.

“Why do we have to have a black month history ! We don't have a white month history or any other month history ! History is history and we learn about all "we should not have to highlight only black history ! Fed up with havin to single out certain groups when we should all be one !”

“Sorry, Maybe I worded that wrong, Meaning that Black people Have their OWN History Months. But, Any occasion White people have is for Everyone Colour/race/creed, Why does this have to be Black..........Proud? Pushy? I don't know??? Why does colour always have to come into it? Can we not JUST be People?????????????”

“I think that we're bullied into not being proud because it might offend the ethnic minorities. Still, it's the Diamond Jubilee next year and will be one of those occasions when we'll be allowed to wave our Union Flag :o)”

“I usually agree with most of your posts thebabygib but, in this case ....... what a load of codswallop! Being 'proud' has nothing whatsoever to do with the colour of a persons skin. I go with CuppaTeaPlz in that I cannot see how events like this promote community cohesion but serve to do the opposite by highlighting divisions :(”

    “Black history month?
Does part of these activities include protesting about sinister black child wigs at the 99p shop?
Even though the kid on the packaging is a very sinister looking white child?

That story is on the front cover of the advertiser so must be more important during black history month”
