Croydon's primary schools were ranked from best to worst this week, with the publication of the official Key Stage 2 results.

The figures reveal how Year 6 pupils performed in science, maths and English SATs (standard assessment tests) taken in summer.

Top of the table is Courtwood Primary School, in Forestdale, with a perfect score of 300 out of 300.

A school gets scores out of 100 for English, maths and science which equate to the percentage of its children reaching the national benchmark of level four in exams for each subject.

These three scores are then added together to make a score out of 300.

Courtwood was fifth in the Croydon league table last year but outscored all the schools above it, including last year's number one - St Aidan's, in Coulsdon.

Languishing at the bottom of the table is Oval Primary School, in East Croydon, which scored just 189 out of 300.

Castle Hill Primary School, in New Addington, saw the biggest improvement, leaping from 146 in 2008 to 212 in 2009.

Croydon Council's cabinet member for children's services and adult learning Tim Pollard says that schools which failed to perform well are already being given extra help.
