BUDDING DJs hope to banish Radio 1's Chris Moyles to the history books today (Wednesday) when they embark on a marathon charity challenge.

The seven teens from Archbishop Tenison's School will swap their textbooks for headsets as they bid to smash the world record for the longest radio show ever.

They are hoping to stay on air for 61 hours, which would beat the current record of 52 hours set by Moyles earlier this year for Comic Relief.

The show will be broadcast live from one of the participant's front rooms and will be available on internet radio station Teen FM.

All money raised from the event will go to Wings of Hope, a charity that helps underprivileged youngsters in India and Malaysia.

It will start at 9am and run until 9pm on Friday.

One of the organisers is 16-year-old Ciaran Knight, from South Croydon, who said: "We were sat around thinking of ways to raise money and we wanted to do something different.

"We all go to Archbishop Tenison's CofE High School and one of us already does a show on Teen FM so the idea sprung up on us."

The group consists of Ciaran, Luke Stead, 16, from Shirley; Oliver Wickenden, 16, from Shirley; Emma Allen, 17, from Upper Norwood; Bethany Gibbs, 16, from Shirley; David Cresswell, 16, from Croydon and Hannah Jones, 16 from Mitcham.

"We are all really excited, but a bit apprehensive. We are doing it from Bethany's front room and her mum said she doesn't mind as long as we don't make too much noise at night," Ciaran explained.

"Basically the rules are that we all have to be on air and near the mic for the entire time.

"We are allowed to take a five minute break each hour, but we are allowed to let that build up so we can take longer breaks.

"Our plan at the minute is to do the first 24 hours all together with no break then take it in turns to have naps. It is going to be difficult."

And not content with breaking one world record, the magnificent seven have said they will be trying to break other smaller records throughout the show.

Ciaran added: "The plan is to do minute challenges, such as how many Jaffa Cakes can you eat in a minute and so on.

"We want to raise a minimum of £1,000 so anyone that has ideas for little challenges and are willing to sponsor us to do them should get in touch."
