Crystal Palace Garden Party cancelled over rotting stage
A TWO-day festival which was going to revive the musical magic of the 1970s has been cancelled due to a rotting stage.
The Crystal Palace Garden Party was due to take place at Crystal Palace bowl on June 23 and 24, in a revival of an old music festival which would have featured music from the likes of Rick Wakeman, Hawkwind and the London Gala Symphony Orchestra.

Rick Wakeman was due to play at Crystal Palace Garden Party later this month
But now promoter Mike Fox has had to cancel the event, after discovering the old stage, where the likes of The Beach Boys and Bob Marley once played, is rotting and unsafe to perform on.
Mr Fox said: "We thought that there was just superficial damage to the stage but when we lifted up the temporary boards we saw that the joists were just completely rotted and it can't be fixed in time.

"I'm just absolutely gutted.
"I'm going to lose thousands of pounds and this is something I have been working on and living and breathing seven days a week for the last five weeks.
"I've been dreaming of it for years. I can't really describe the frustration I feel."
Mr Fox now faces a long battle to make sure everyone who bought tickets is refunded, and must still find the money to pay the bands that were scheduled to play.
He said: "We aren't sure what the fall-out of this is yet. Right now I'm just concentrating on making sure everyone gets their money back.
"I don't know what's going to happen, it could bankrupt me.
"I just wanted to bring back the fantastic gigs of years before.
"It's such a shame."

“What a crying shame. It would be fantastic to see Hawkwind and Curved Air again in a local setting.”

“Surely, this would have been investigated long before the concert was due?, Its called forward planning. That stage was there well before I saw Bob over 30 years ago. Its made of wood so maintaining it should be done frequently and not as an after thought.
It could have been prevented.”

“The local NIMBYS are at fault again. No improvements can be made to the park whilst they stop every little thing improvement from happening. It's so sad to see the once great park fall into ruin.”
