Rickie Lambert hit the 30-goal mark to fire Southampton a step closer to the Barclays Premier League with a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace.

The Championship's leading scorer netted either side of half-time to sink Palace and send Saints three points clear at the top.

Lambert has now hit 87 goals in three years for the south-coast side and the prolific 30-year-old, who has spent his entire career in the lower divisions, looks certain to finally get a crack at the top flight.

With five games to go Nigel Adkins' side are on the brink of back-to-back promotions, sitting three points ahead of Reading - who play Brighton on Tuesday - while crucially also keeping third-placed West Ham at arm's length.

By contrast Palace's season, which has included a run to the Carling Cup semi-finals, is fizzling out after a third straight defeat.

The injury-hit Eagles almost grabbed a shock early lead when Kagisho Dikgacoi's header was tipped over the crossbar by Kelvin Davis.

Saints goalkeeper Davis came to his side's rescue again 10 minutes before half-time with a stunning save to deny Kyle de Silva.

The locally-born 18-year-old, thrown in for his full league debut for patched-up Palace, almost capped it with a superb run and shot from 20 yards but Davis stuck out a hand to palm it over.

Yet somehow, Palace went in behind at the break - thanks to the irrepressible Lambert.

The striker had been feeding off scraps for the first half an hour, until he suddenly burst into life with a low shot from 18 yards which was deflected narrowly wide.

From the corner Lambert rifled the ball in the net but the whistle had already gone for a push by former Eagle Jose Fonte.

But in the 39th minute another Palace old boy, Danny Butterfield, crossed from the right, defender Paddy McCarthy missed it but Lambert did not, climbing above Nathaniel Clyne to bury his header past Julian Speroni.

There was time for Palace striker Chris Martin to blaze over before the interval.

But Lambert ended any hopes of a Palace revival 10 minutes after the restart with another well taken strike.

Played in by Jack Cork, Lambert skilfully sidestepped McCarthy on the edge of the area before arrowing a low drive into the far corner.

To Palace's credit they kept going forward and Davis saved well again from Sean Scannell's deflected shot.

But nothing was going to deny Saints, who are marching on towards a return to the Premier League seven years after they left.

    “BromleyTim,
If the papers are correct, Martin wont be coming back next season, i know it`s only paper talk, but it said the old enemy, the Seaweeds are looking to sign him for £1.2m, our 4 multi-millionaire owners cant afford that.
Luis, you reckon Freedman only needs 3/4 more players to improve our small squad, did Dougie tell you that or where did you read it, where does the team need improving Luis?
Will we have to replace Clyne, the best right back in the Championship, Zaha or Williams, or what about Calvin Andrew & our wonderful finisher Easter, how could we replace those 2?
Luis, where does the team need improving, has Freedman told you how much he has in the budget, do you feel we need to sign a striker, or do you feel, Murray, Easter & Andrew will get us the goals, that will get us in the play offs?”

“So Luis, next Season according to you we go for the Playoff''s

    Luis
It just shows your attitude and lack of ambition. Surely we go for Automatic Promotion don't we.

For the present Palace hierarchy, three or four signings of quality is out of reach.

Tell me, would any Striker of Quality want to Play for Palace being aware of Freedman's boring, negative, pathetic tactics and a so called Manager who don't know his best team.'

Zaha, Scannell, etc have had the stuffing knock out of them due to Freedman's Tactics.

I want to live in hope, not despair.

Yes the Board have saved the Club for which we are grateful, but if they are nervous to Invest, then sell up and move on.”

“My Opinion we gifted Southampton and Rickie Lambert the Two goals you cant allow on form striker any room to pull his trigger, their was Danny Butterfield wide on the right putting over a looping cross thats gone over McCarthy's Head right in the path of on coming lambert on the far post firing in a bullet header past helpless Speroni.
Their was I watching McCarthy and Dean Moxey who has done exceptionally well filling in for Andrew Gardner practising headers on warm up before Kick off, McCarthy total liability as a major Centre Back Gifted Lambert again allowed him to Juggle past for a clear shot on goal striking the ball with vigour with Julian Speroni barely able to move when the ball already was back of the net, and McCarthy's clearances instead of easily putting the ball wide out to touch strikes the ball aimlessly out for a Saints corner kick, far to often this season his defending totally erratic.
I felt we played rather well despite the loss my gripe is selection and the formation we take up against teams especially the leaders who set out to play physical and with three strikers.
what is the point in leaving three players when corners taken by the Saints, there was Scannell playing central striker Wilf who now looked a spent force and barely see the game out with exhaustion, and another fine looking prospect Kyle De Silva on the left.with Southampton having the total midfield to themselves, able to dominate the play.
Chris Martin carrying out the duties of Ambrose playing more of a midfield role rather than a central or supporting strike where he is most suited.
Dougie and your staff youth lost the plot for this season at least try to salvage something out for the rest of the games that we may hopefully something to look forward to for the future.”

“After last season have to give DF staff, players and 2010 credit for steadying the ship but he hasnt got the experience to move us forward.Maybe as an assistant to a proven promotion winning manager such as another scot in billy davies.Only trouble is that to tempt any manager you have to provide a promotion winning amount of money for the transfer market and 2010 will no doubt prefer the doog as he will tow the line and work on loanees and the odd 500k signing .”

“i think freedman is a weak coach who cannot tell any player off he always makes excuses,a good coach would be planning for next year but i can see us being in trouble with freedman playing the same way as this season we are open down the middle without gardner and mcCarthy needs replacing so does easter, ambrose, wright, clynne, garvan, martin, andrews, a big rebuilding program needed also what has happened to marrow he looked ok but has disappered alot of work to be done.”

“You can see now how bad a defender McCarthy is without Gardner beside him, he is slow & his distribution is awful, all he does is lump it upfront, it is all well & good playing the likes of Parsons & De Silva, but will they get a look in next season under Freedman, i doubt it, Lofty is right, the only signings we will get is the cast offs the other Championship teams do not want, totally agree with Terry, Adkins signed Jack Cork from Chelsea, a good ball playing midfielder, we signed KG from Fulham, so can Freedman be trusted with the little money he will get from Parish?
Look at his signings, apart from Parr, who was a good signing, when he has spent who has been any good? certainly not our `Wonderful Striker` Easter.”

“Been saying all season even when we were picking up points just dont reckon Freedman!! All he seems to do is praise other teams when they beat us or seems really pleased if we get a point! Mind you i think the 2010 mob are happy just to stay in the championship, really don't think they have any ambition!!! Carries on like this last couple of months or so certain to struggle next season! (Paul, Dorset)”
