Surrey wicketkeeper Steven Davies earns England call-up
SURREY keeper Steven Davies says he wants to cement his place in the England squad for this winter's tour of Australia after being called up to face Pakistan in the forthcoming one day series.
The 24-year-old has been picked alongside Somerset keeper Craig Kieswetter in the Twenty20 squad, but will be given the gloves with Kieswetter playing exclusively as a batsman.
"I'm over the moon, I felt I might have been close to the squad, but you never really expect these things," said Davies.
"I've performed consistently all season and I'm really looking forward to it."
Calls for Davies to be given another opportunity with England have grown louder in recent weeks as the former Worcestershire youngster has been in fantastic form since making the move to the Oval last winter.
And Davies says he wants to establish himself in the side in time for this winters tour of Australia.
"That is obviously the target," he added. "I think my batting has been very good this year and I have confidence that I'm good enough to be part of the England set-up.
"But there are a lot of good keepers in England and I'm taking nothing for granted. I just need to concentrate on doing well in these next few games."
Chris Adams, Surrey's cricket manger, who brought Davies to the county, said he was delighted at the news.
"He's had a magnificent season," he added. "He's improved his game in all aspects. He's improved on his stats in every competition.
"He's been fantastic for Surrey and a great signing. I'm delighted for him that he's been picked. It's just reward for a very hard working season, where he's proved game after game what a quality player he is."
