Croydon Municipal Sunday Football League round-up

Division Three

D Dempster hit seven as Purley Phoenix A went goal crazy against fellow strugglers Croydon City.

J Leavy also claimed a hat-trick as Phoenix stormed to a 10-2 victory. Osman Turan and Marcos Santos replied for Croydon.

Croydon Independiente remain on top of the table following their 4-2 win over South Norwood United thanks to goals from D Lee (2), T McDaid and M Murray. S Davis and A Hartnett replied for Norwood.

AFC Rio received a dent to their title hopes when they were defeated 3-1 by Goodfellas Reserves. A Gaynor got the consolation goal for Rio.

Goals from L Hazelby and B Ladiende were not enough to prevent high-flying Maple Tree from going down 4-2 to Green Phoenix Eagles.

Division Two

Real Madras went top of the table thanks to their 9-1 win over Sanderstead Spitfires.

Grant Elgrin and Tim Lloyd both scored hat-tricks while Dave King and Richard Wroe were also on the scoresheet with Simon Draper getting his first goal in seven years.

S Loader scored all the goals as Carlton United won 4-1 away to Oakfield Manor A.

All the goals came in the second half as Portland completely dominated their match against Banter. Phil Broughton was the architect of the Portland win with a hat-trick while Ben Mankelow was also on target with an effort that is already a contender for goal of the season.

Premier League

Mitsubishi Electric continue to lead the way at the top of the table, their 2-0 win at Thornton Rovers extending their lead to six points. K Darylmple got both goals.

Barca emerged 4-2 winners from an action-paked encounter with AFC Thornton. The visitors took the lead on the half-hour courtesy of a deflected shot, but Ryan Scott equalised from close range for Thornton.

Thornton took the lead just before the break from an Adam Rea penalty after he had been fouled in the box.

A stunning save from James kept Barca at bay, but the visitors eventually equalised when Damian Scott inadvertently helped the ball into his own net.

Barca's third goal came from a header and they settled the match with a goal on the break as Thornton pushed for an equaliser.

M Montague, A Thompson and K Townend-Gray (2) were the Barca scorers.

Division One

T Blesson, N Harding, S Joyce and B Chincharo (2) were on target as Golden Lion Reserves shocked leaders Postmac with a 5-0 win.

Purley Phoenix avenged their previous defeat to Shumba Warriors by claiming a 4-1 victory thanks largely to M Osborne's hat-trick. R McDonald added the fourth goal with R Brown scoring for the home side.

Division Four

Barracuda continue to romp towards the title, goals from N Mullane, S Napp and S Thomas edging out Ashburton Wanderers 3-2. D Kittyo and A Ricketts responded for Ashburton.

N Bing and M Langley scored for Forum Flyers but it was not enough as they went down 5-2 against Addiscombe Corinthians (A Malcolm 2, G Buckley, H Cambridge, C Robinson).

N Kwami scored all the goals as Croydon Corporation overcame Oakfield Manor B 4-0.

T Donovan, C Fyffe, P Moncton and D Williamson were on target for Surrey Valley as they saw off PSV Greenacres 4-2. J McGillivray and N Oddy were the scorers for PSV.

So pleased was the manager seeing Athletico Croydon win their match 4-2 against Ravens United, that he gave all of his side the star-player award.

Athletico were only able to field the bare 11 and the Ravens keeper made some superb saves to keep them in contention.

The second half saw Athletico reduced to 10 men through injury, but they managed to hold on and then finish the game off with a 25-yard curler from Paul Samuels. D Norman had previously chipped in with two goals and B Samuels got the other.

Division Five

KS Apalonia were disappointed to lose their game against Southwark Caribb. They went down 1-0 to what they felt was a dubious penalty decision and then conceded a second goal following a defensive mix-up.

Apalonia had plenty of chances, but could not convert these to goals and some brave keeping from the Caribb goalkeeper helped keep them at bay.

In the end Caribb just managed to edge it to win 3-2 thanks to goals from I Bangura and D McCook (2). N Minxha and R Shehas replied for Apalonia.

Goals from A Manly and L Manley could not prevent Wickham Wanderers going down 4-2 at Goodfellas C.

Surrey FA Senior Cup

Premier League AFC Phoenix were unable to play their normal defensive line-up and it showed as they suffered a 7-0 first-round thrashing at the hands of AFC Ashtead.

Surrey FA Junior Cup

Phoenix Athletic moved easily into the fourth round with a comfortable 6-2 win over Raynes Park Rovers.

Trailing 2-0 at half-time, Phoenix were led superbly by captain Danny Cumber, who claimed his side's first goal. V Lehey, M Hunt and T Thorpe were also on target with A Jones scoring the other two to turn the game around.
