IT'S A DOG'S LIFE: Some of the pets in the pews
A church service with a difference has been held - as sat obediently in the pews listening to carols and prayers were a bunch of dogs.
The service was held for members of Waggy Tails – a dog obedience and training club that helps children with special needs come out of themselves.
An annual event, held at Emmanuel Church, on Normanton Road, South Croydon, it was held after the kids and dogs enjoyed a festive party.
Some of the children gave readings and introduced carols and hymns in the church.
Curate Jan Wilson, who conducted the service, said: "It's really funny to see the dogs looking up at me from the pews during the service – it's like an episode of The Vicar of Dibley.
"It amazed me how well behaved they all were.
"Even though it's quite a strange sight I love dogs and it was wonderful to see all of God's creations filling the church – animals and humans all together."
Friends and families of the Waggy Tails members were also at the service to support the children and join in with carol singing.
One particular member of the congregation – an English sheepdog – was keen to show off his musical ability as he barked along to each song.
Waggy Tails' Carol Petley added: "The party was a real success and it is just amazing to see the kids reading out prayers and introducing carols in front of everyone with such confidence."

“How about this... just ship some dogs in from China a few containers full and let them loose around the churchs obviously work out the distribution pattern beforehand... and see what happens... ther'e get bloody good and singing what with spending all their time there wont they; they may even make it on X-factor... i can see the headline already 'Orphan dogs from China named Matthew, Mark, Luke and John by the local holy communian hit stardom' and a great big picture of Simon Cowell stroking them affectionately.”
