James Daly's Eagle-Eyed Views from the Stands

THIS week Palace fans were shocked by the announcement that Sean Scannell had left the club and headed north to join Huddersfield Town.

Not since that time I had an MRI on my dodgy back was I rooting for Big Scanz so much but as a local lad who loved playing for Palace, you always hoped he would become a big star for the Eagles. But somehow, it didn't happen.

He did, though, have the best hair of any Palace player for some time, with some serious dreadlocks that clearly took years of effort – more effort than I've ever put into anything.

He also worked with local kids and was a great ambassador for the club, going to talk in schools and even setting up his own coaching course.

And we were afforded some great Scannell moments over the five or so years he was in the Eagles first team: including a deft chip over the keeper on his home debut for Palace to score his first ever goal and being the man who squared to Darren Ambrose for THAT goal at Hillsborough.

But my favourite Big Scanz moment came at this year's end of season party at Selhurst. A little worse for wear, I took the opportunity to interview any Palace player that would talk to me for the FYP podcast and after having chewed Dougie's ear about the I Belong To Dougie t-shirt (which his kids wore on the end of season lap of honour against Cardiff), and talking to Anthony Gardner about actual gardening, I tracked down Sean Scannell.

What followed might be my favourite Palace moment ever.

Me: "So Sean, if you could sign any player for Palace who would it be and wh…"

Sean: (Cutting me off mid sentence) "Messi".

Me: "Ah good choice and what would you say to him if he did si…".

Sean: (Excitedly cutting me off again) "I LOVE YOU MESSI".

Legend.
