FOOTBALL fanatic James Donovan has won £5,000 in a national competition – and promised his mum and dad a holiday out of the winnings.

James, 20, of Bates Crescent, Waddon, entered a fantasy football contest at the Gipsy Moth pub, on Croydon's Purley Way, and beat about 4,500 other entrants at pubs across the country to the prize.

James is on the sort of winning streak which the England team will be hoping to replicate at the World Cup. The team he supports, Chelsea, won the Premiership and FA Cup this season, while the Sunday team he plays for, Surrey Valley FC, won the third division of the Croydon Municipal League.

Asked what he planned to do with the money, James said: "I've told my parents they can go on holiday wherever they want. Knowing them they'll probably want to go on a cruise."

The team James put together included Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and Chelsea star Didier Drogba.

But James was not the only entrant with a local connection to win cash.

Finishing in third place was Frank Casey, who entered at the Shirley Inn, in Wickham Road, Shirley, and won £1,000.

QPR fan Mr Casey, 45, said: "I was totally surprised."
