This is Croydon

I read an interesting article in the Evening Standard on the 27th October, which I would like to share with you, about Eco -Clubbing. This is not a concept I had ever considered before, so when I sat on the train coming out of Victoria at midnight, I was quite intrigued.

The world's first ecological nightclub was launched in London earlier this year - it's called 'Surya'. It has Piezo crystal technology in it's dance floor. These convert the energy created by dancing feet to generate electricity and power the venue. It also has water-free toilets (I'm not sure about this), ozone friendly aircon and uses ammonia and chemical free paints. The bar is even made from melted down recycled mobile phones.

The person behind this club and concept is Dr Earth, who says "that climate change isn't about the climate, its about us, the way we live and whether we can change". He continues " everyone likes music and dancing so why not use that to get the message across".

I think this is a great idea, and hope that it makes people realise that being green isn't just about wearing wellies, you can do it in stilettos and sequins. The club is at 156 Pentonville Road, London N1, but more information can be found on its website http://www.viewlondon.co.uk/clubs/surya-info-52971.html .

I thought the name of the club was unusual, so I looked it up on wickepedia and discovered that in Hinduism, Surya, is the chief solar diety. The word is also used to refer to the sun, which is very appropriate for this exciting new club.

If anyone goes, I would love to hear from them.

“I did notice in my daily newspaper today that all the hard work done by householders to seperate, and collect all the glass, plastic bottles, cardboard, paper, e.t.c. seems to be a waste of time - as it appears that due to the econmic downturn contractors will no longer buy this green waste from local councils anymore... it appears that councils are having to hire giant warehouses to fill them up with all our 'green' waste!! Has the bubble burst on people going green ??”
