Elderly enjoy 'holiday'
ELDERLY residents in Selsdon managed to "travel" all around the UK for a summer holiday – without once leaving the comfort of their church.
Selsdon Baptist Church hosted a "Holiday at Home" week where older parishioners were invited to take a tour of Great Britain in the church hall, for the fifth year in a row.
The premises, in Addington Road, had been cleverly decorated to resemble a train journey round the country.
Around 30 people "travelled" to Bath, Cardiff, Edinburgh and York, listening to traditional Scottish, Welsh and English music at each stop.
There were handmade postcards they could send and traditional food to suit each stop.
Organiser, The Rev David Mayne, said: "People think the retired don't need a holiday but it's not true.
"This made it possible for a lot of people to have a break without the hassle of booking something and paying to go away.
"It's a fantastic opportunity and people get to have a little holiday while meeting new people."
The Rev Mayne said the holiday, which was held a fortnight ago, was intended to pamper guests who might not be able to travel far.
He explained: "We like to spoil them a bit and they don't have to worry about cooking or cleaning while they're with us."
