Famous faces to take part for Crystal Palace All Star XI in charity match
HOUSEHOLD names including Alan Pardew, Chris Coleman and Mark Bright will be gracing the pitch at Jubilee Fields when Three Bridges play host to a charity match.
On Sunday, a Crystal Palace All Star XI will take on a Brighton All Star XI in memory of Ella Funnell, the daughter of ex-Seagull and current Bridges striker, Simon Funnell.
Ella died just before Christmas 2009 at just 18 days old from a Group B Strep infection which caused meningitis.
The match is aiming to raise £10,000 for meningitis charities Group B Strep Support and Meningitis UK, and also raise awareness about how the virus can be detected.
In June, Simon and 53 of his family and friends completed a bike ride from Portsmouth to Brighton which raised more than £7,000 for the charities, and by the year anniversary of Ella's death the family aim to hit the £20,000 mark. But as well as a serious message, Simon is hoping the charity match will be a fun day for everyone involved.
"We want to get as many people as we can down to Three Bridges to support Ella's two trusts," Simon explained.
"We just want to raise awareness about the Strep B which is what Ella died from. They are trying to work on a vaccine for all meningitis and also there is a scan pregnant women can have which is only £30 and people aren't made aware of it. If we'd had the scan you never know whether we would have lost Ella or not."
Simon played for Brighton between 1991 and 1995 and admits he is looking forward to the match.
"I played for Brighton when Barry Lloyd was the manager and they played at the Goldstone, which is now a retail park, which I disagree with!" he joked.
"I had some great times; I was a professional footballer for seven years there – one of the lucky ones you might say."
Simon, who lives in Purley, will be managing the Brighton team, while Steve Kember manages Palace, and Simon foresees a lot of substitutions.
"I think I'm going to play a bit of it but I will have played the day before as well so not all of it. We have a squad of 18 or 20 players but some of them won't want to play for too long because they're too old, me included!" he quipped.
"They'll be some big names that both sets of fans will know and hopefully everyone can be nice on the day because we know what Palace and Brighton are like."
The Eagles team will include Steve Kember, Simon Rogers, Mark Bright, Bobby Bowry, Alan Pardew, Andy Woodman, Chris Coleman, Dean Austin, Dougie Freedman, Richard Shaw, and Simon Osbourne.
And the Seagulls team will feature Mark Ormerod, Danny Simmonds, Kerry Mayo, Steve Foster, Paul Watson, Peter Smith, John Byrne, Paul Rogers, Stuart Munday, Charlie Oatway, Jamie Moralee, Richard Carpenter, and Russell Bromage.
In addition to the football, there will be face painting, a large bouncy castle, a penalty shootout competition and a balloon race. Gates open at 11am and kick off is at 1pm.
