SANTA will be hopping on his sleigh and visiting families around South Croydon to "start the magic of Christmas" and raise money for charity.

The Rotary Club of Croydon South is sending Father Christmas out every night, from 6 to 8.30pm, until December 21.

Graham Upton, chairman of the club's community and vocational committee, said: "Lots of people tell us this starts their Christmas.

"I think people like the idea and it's wonderful for children because they get to see Santa on his sleigh going past their bedroom window. It starts the magic for a lot of people."

The club usually raises around £7,000 through the festive spectacle. Signs are up on lampposts in the area to tell residents when Santa will arrive, and gift aid envelopes have been posted through letterboxes.
