BLAZE: Lloyd Park
A group of teenagers sparked a huge police and fire service operation in Lloyd Park on Tuesday night, when a bonfire they lit threatened to spread out of control.
Passers-by alerted the emergency services after spotting that a group of around 40 youths had started a blaze in a woodland area in the park.
A firefighter from Croydon Fire Station, who was on the scene within minutes, said: "It was a bonfire that looked like it was getting out of control.
"There was a group of around 30 or 40 youths, and they thought they would light a campfire.
"Three police cars came along, because when we got there we thought there was going to be trouble.
"But luckily the kids turned out to be harmless, they were just having a bit of fun."
Nevertheless, the youngsters were slammed for their recklessness.
The firefighter said: "It wasn't a good idea, especially because the woodland was so dry.
"That's how big fires start when the weather's like this."
A spokesman for Croydon police confirmed that the group dispersed as soon as officers arrived.

“I think Teresa makes a very valid point. The citizens of this country have been so nannied that they have lost all common sense. Anyone with more than 2 brain cells would know that it is unwise to start a bonfire in dry woodland. You shouldnt need a sign to tell you that.”
