PROMISING TO PUT CROYDON ON THE PARTY MAP: DJ Chris Goldfinger outside The Cartoon
A mix of celebrities and footballers are expected to descend on Croydon as one of its most famous nightspots reopens this weekend.
The Cartoon pub, in London Road, West Croydon, has been taken over by former Radio 1 DJ Chris Goldfinger - who has promised to put the borough on the party map.
A star-studded line-up of guests are expected tomorrow (Saturday) night for the reopening of the venue - which will now be known as The Club.
Goldfinger, who presented a reggae show on Radio 1 for 13 years, is promising Premiership footballers from Chelsea and Aston Villa at the opening.
And he is also expecting DJs Tim Westwood and Trevor Nelson to be there.
"It's going to be a very big party," he said. "I want to put some life back into the Croydon clubbing scene. We've got footballers coming down and DJs coming to party.
"I want to put Croydon on the party map."
Up to £100,000 has been spent refurbishing the premises and fitting them with a top class sound system.
A huge amount of cash has also been spent on kitting out the venue with top security including CCTV, finger printing devices, ID scanners and metal detectors.
Goldfinger says he has taken huge precautions to ensure the club is not tainted by violence.
"We have a no-nonsense policy," he said. "If people are coming into the club they have to behave themselves.
"It's something I do worry about. But I've done everything in my power to make sure trouble stays out of the club."

“I am gutted that the once great place to go and hear live music is now going to be a place for more dj's and if they have spend all that money on security im guessing they are assuming they will have trouble, as a very regular member of the toon i can see if had very little trouble, please re open as rock club for live music, you can go and listen to dj's and hip hop type music anywhere in croydon, bring back the real tunes!”

“The Cartoon was destined to close down what with the decline in the neighbourhood.
Have you even been into West Croydon? People risk their lives just popping to the shops to buy some milk.
Most of the good people of the area have long since moved out leaving behind the trash of society.”

“As a musician I played at the Cartoon quite a few years ago, was a great venue, brilliant sound system which was brand new at that time. I was very sad when it went the way that Beano's and Turtles, Croydon's other notable establishments, have now gone.”

“So another good club was closed for no reason and is now turned into another reaggea/hip-hop venue in Croydon. I agree that it needed some major work (the toilets were a Legend), but why did it not re-open as the rock-club it once was, which supported local bands, live music and didn't need tons of security as the guest were well enough behaved ? I bet the original owners aren't happy”

“I don't think that having footballers present is anything to brag about; they're well known for having lots of money but very little in the way of taste or class. The event will probably attract a couple of ex Big Brother contestants, & maybe someone who was on East-Enders 10 years ago.”
