Free parking boost for New Addington

"EXCITING" plans have been put in place to attract more visitors and extra business to New Addington.

An idea, which was last week put forward to make parking free in Central Parade at certain times, has been hailed as "wonderful news" for the estate.

In the next couple of weeks, the pilot scheme will start to make it free to park in the two car parks on Central Parade and the one outside the ACA for the first half hour whenever the market is on, which is Tuesday and Friday weekly.

New Addington councillor Tony Pearson said: "It really is wonderful news.

"All too often in the past the area has been forgotten about, with little or no money pledged to better the area, but it seems to be changing now.

"This move will hopefully better the viability of the market and increase footfall into the area.

"As well as offering the free half hour, we are also going to be lowering the cost for an hour of parking from 70p to 50p on all the other days."

Other changes for the area include extending the raised platform which is currently outside Iceland, which will make the crossing area safer for residents.

"The money to make this happen will be coming out of the Outer London Fund, and we will spend some of the money that Boris Johnson granted us to make that happen.

"We asked residents how they thought the money would be well spent in the area, and this was one of the ideas. Raising more of the road surface will mean people crossing the road will have a clearer view of when it is safe to cross.

"We are hoping this will be done in the next couple of months although no set date is set for this work yet."

And when the new parking charges come into force, the market will be given a new home.

Councillor Pearson said: "We trialled an idea around Christmas time to put the market on the slip road in front of the shops rather than in the car park and it worked really well, so that is going to be permanent now too.

"It is good to see New Addington getting changes and hopefully when the village green business is out of the way we can look at other regeneration plans."

“It would be a more level playing field nicecityboy and CupaTeaPlz , if you could identify the general area of the Borough you live in.

Croydon, there you go, now you know. :)”

“@nicecityboy - try reading my post again CAREFULLY. I did not ask you to reveal where you live, I questioned WHY you were reluctant to disclose your location. As per Cupa you do not see why a level playing field is more conducive to open debate then.

You may also wish to re-read your seemingly many postings on New Addington and it's inhabitants - think you'll find you have always been eager to malign and deride wholesale.”

“Krystal333 no I will not tell you where I am from, it's irrelevant plus quite simply none of your business. Nobody is putting down individual people, rather the area in general from what I can see.

If all the crimes and nasty things weren't going on around that area we would not keep reading about them in the paper. Trying to defend the area by attacking anyone who dares to mention the two dreaded words (N*** A********) will not make the truth go away!”
