Friends and relatives of a father-of-one who died in a car smash have paid tribute to him – by going fishing.

Wayne Michie, a 35-year-old builder, died instantly when his van collided with a car in Limpsfield Road, Warlingham, last January.

His family said the collision happened after he swerved to avoid a pothole in the road.

But an inquest in Woking this July failed to determine what caused his death.

Mr Michie was a fanatical fisherman so about 20 loved ones took part in a 24-hour angling marathon in his memory last month.

They met up at Keston Lakes near Bromley – one of his favourite locations.

The event raised more than £300 for Mr Michie's son Sean, 11.

Mr Michie's mother Bev Burn said: "We wanted to set up something to remember Wayne by.

"He adored his fishing and the event will be held each year."

His partner Claire Arthur added: "I loved him to bits.

"His son was number one, and fishing and I came a close second."

Mr Michie, who worked for LS Services construction firm in Birch Avenue, Caterham, was on his way to work when the fatal crash happened.

He formerly attended Addington High School and lived in Frimley Close, New Addington, before moving to Sevenoaks.
