Grant's marathon effort for school
A SALES manager has put his body on the line to raise thousands of pounds for a special needs school in South Croydon.
Grant Harris is nothing short of a superhero to staff and students at Rutherford School, in Melville Avenue, after completing the gruelling Iron Man Copenhagen challenge last Sunday.
The 30-year-old's fiancée, Lucy Harvey, is head physiotherapist at the school for disabled children.
He endured "physical agony" as he completed a 2.5-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run in just over ten hours.
Speaking from Copenhagen the day after his accomplishment, which raised £3,000, Grant said: "It was by far the toughest thing I've ever done. I have done a couple of half marathons and a few standard triathlons but this was off the scale. It was colossal.
"I was exhausted and in pain during the race, and the toughest bit was the run at the end.
"The only thing that kept me going was sheer determination and also the image of the kids at Rutherford, for whom I was racing."
The money Grant has raised will go towards a new school hall, hydrotherapy pool and sensory room.
