Old Palace School is no longer serving Halal meat on its school menu after parents complained.

The Whitgift Foundation's John Whitgift Schools committee took the decision after some parents were furious pupils were not being given a choice.

The Halal method, in which animals are slaughtered by a single slit to the throat, is the only was of killing livestock allowed under Islam.

But the method is deemed cruel by some animal-lovers, who object to the slow death it involves.

In a letter to parents, after taking advice from religious leaders, chair of the committee Rosemary Jones said: "We have decided that Halal meat should no longer be served to our pupils in line with what we understand is the general policy adopted by multi-faith schools.

"We shall continue to offer a hot vegetarian option and an extensive range of cold salads as an alternative meal for those pupils choosing not to eat non-Halal meat."

The menu was changed in November after the Advertiser revealed some parents had no idea the policy had been in force at Old Palace for up to 10 years.

Parents furious about the Halal policy were from the recently amalgamated Croham Hurst School and were labelled "racist bigots" by Old Palace spokeswoman Lucy Mazzeo.

Mrs Jones added in the letter: "We are very sorry for any anxiety or offence that may have been caused by this issue or by the recent articles and letters published in the local media.

"As a Christian Foundation, we celebrate the diversity of all the cultural and religious groups attending our schools."

Old Palace refused to answer further questions on the decision.

“Well Garry the jugular vein is slit thereby ensuring the quickest death and most humane. This is not fanciful stuff; this is the stuff of science ie if a major vein like the jugular is cut death is pretty much instantaneous..why the furore?”

“whee you know its less painful do you? could you do an experiment for this "stupid briton" as you call us, and slit your own throat and let me know what the pain level is? i imagine your not american just a freeloader living there enjoying your freedom while whinging about your civil right's, which incidently allowed you to pass comment without fear of reprisal or being beheaded, (or your throat slit)”

    Whatever happened to :

"Thou shalt have no other gods before me..." ?

The "christian" part of the name sounds like false advertising to me to start with, whatever meat is served !”

“Hats off to those folk who had the stones to make this call and have this elitism stopped. The Muslims must pack their lunch if their religious law requires them to eat sacrificial meats. If they cannot share the air with anyone feeding in normaly slaghtered food, then they must take the initiative to segregate themselves, it is not the other children who should be forced to conform!
As a Christian eating burnt offerings is forbidden for me and my son, and I imagine it would be highly offensive to any secular or non-religious person as well.
PS folks - Islam is an Ideology, NOT a race!”

“There is an aspect to serving halal meat which has not been dealt with in either the newspaper report or readers' comments. Serving halal meat, and thereby complying with Moslem dietary rules, is also a means by which an entire society (the English) are being islamicised; Moslem laws require that anyone butchering animals under halal practices must recite Moslem prayers while doing it. The butchers can be non-Moslem but they are actually, therefore, being required to acknowledge the imagined supremacy of Islamic belief and worship of 'allah' and veneration of Islam's warlord founder, Mohamed. Also, the more schools, offices, restaurants that continue to comply with halal food demands, the greater the likelihood of non-Moslem butchers and related industries being forced out of areas and these areas becoming more islamicised --- essentially, Moslem enclaves. This is what is called 'stealth jihad': it refers to the cultural, political, social, legal and economic means by which, almost undetected and often unopposed, Islam becomes the dominant feature of an area, a town, a city and a nation.”

“When it comes to halal meat - parents should be informed - as unlike other meat halal has no formal regulation. The EU wants to put something in place - but some Muslims object.

What this means is that virtually any meat - can be passed off as halal - as was the case of chicken which had been soaked in bleach then sold as halal - because it was bloodless - some of this meat reportedly makes it into school dinners (undercover video showed).

Every local authority is tiptoeing round to make sure Muslims are not offended - but when dietary changes are made - parents should have been informed - because it looks like they've surely offended some Christians and secular folks!”
