IT MAY have been open just four months, but an ice cream parlour in Norbury has confirmed it is looking to expand.

Azhar Rehman, 35, who runs Creams on London Road, wants to create a franchise.

He claims to have made an encouraging start and already counts former British heavyweight boxing champion Danny Williams as one of his customers.

And it's clear preparation has been the key to his early success.

Describing the business, Mr Rehman said: "This was something I had in mind for over two years.

"I didn't want to open something up for the sake of it, I wanted something different.

"When people walk inside it doesn't feel like they're in Norbury, it feels a little bit different – it's a little bit like a 1950s diner theme.

"We chose Norbury because it's very central and near to places like Streatham and Brixton.

"It's also on the A23 for people going into central London.

"Danny Williams has been in quite a few times."

As well as 36 flavours of ice cream, Creams also sells other items like pancakes, waffles, milkshakes, coffee and cakes.

Mr Rehman added: "We've been to Italy a few times now. One of the reasons it took so long to open up is because we wanted to do our research.

"We started off making the ice cream ourselves, but because we were unexpectedly overly busy we had to scrap this idea on a temporary basis."

The ice cream is now ordered in with popular flavours including bubblegum and Ferrero Rocher.

"We even do ice cream for people who don't eat dairy stuff," Mr Rehman said.

While ice cream is naturally viewed as a summer food – cooling customers down when it's warm – Mr Rehman plans to get through the winter by selling hot desserts like apple crumble.

Norbury is the first to have a Creams, but plans are being made to open up other branches.

It is expected these will be outside of the borough though.

Mr Rehman added: "The way I look at it, franchising is the way forward. We are in advanced stages looking for premises."
