CARE home residents were treated to a day of world-class music and dance as part of a pioneering project.

Musicians from the borough's London Mozart Players (LMP) performed to residents of Sunrise Senior Living, in Purley, last Thursday, as part of the new Living Memories project.

The project, organised by the LMP, aims to bring music and dance to dementia sufferers and others who can no longer visit the concert hall. The day of performances included solo violin, viola and cello numbers, waltzes, a tea dance and renditions of "old-time" songs.

Sandy King, activities co-ordinator at the centre, said of the day: "It was wonderful, a brilliant atmosphere, and we felt very privileged to have them here."

LMP cellist Julia Desbruslais, who devised the project, said: "It has been thrilling to see and experience the results already achieved – people coming alive to familiar tunes and songs, the peaceful atmosphere that comes from the live music experience, and the animation and the energy that has been created by the tea dances."

Living Memories, funded by Croydon Relief in Need Charities, will run at different venues until July 2012.
