Maiden wins for new riders
NEW racers Austyn Tusler and Carolyn Heeps scored their first wins for Norwood Paragon as the club gained another clutch of podium places last week.
Tusler raced on Friday at Dunsfold Aerodrome in the Surrey League fourth category race, only his second road race. He rode confidently and in the bunch sprint finish he powered away to take the victory.
Heep was fastest lady at the Redhill CC sporting 14-mile TT at Faygate-Rusper, finishing in 42 minutes 58 seconds over a testing course.
Club-mates James Stuart and Jon Masters were also racing against the clock last week with Stuart taking second place in Horsham Cycling's evening 10-mile TT at Rusper in 21:19, just seven seconds behind the winner.
Masters was in the top three in Redhill's TT on the same circuit on Wednesday covering the distance in 22:23.
There was a strong turn-out of Norwood Paragon racers at the Surrey League Handicap on the Newdigate circuit on Thursday night.
Marcus Brueton, Dave Kennett, James Stuart and Andy McKie rode in the scratch group with Dan Sullivan and Mike Cownley in the groups ahead.
The scratch had to work hard to close the gap on the leaders and eventually Stuart and Betts (Sigma Sport) broke clear on the final lap, pursuing the final group. The pair worked hard to stay clear while their team-mates policed the bunch to ensure the gap remained.
Stuart and Betts caught the leaders and passed them on the final hill with Betts taking the win and Stuart a close second. Brueton came third in the bunch sprint which finished behind the lead group, placing him only 21st with his team-mate Sullivan 24th and the rest of the Paragon safely in the bunch.
Ralph de Kanter came sixth at Hillingdon in the fourth category race and Jason Humphries was seventh in the Beastway MTB Masters event, putting him in sixth place overall in the series.
Angus MacAlister has been turning his attention to time trials with notable success. MacAlister stormed round Richmond Park last Sunday in the London Dynamo TT which saw over 100 entrants. The powerful Paragon finished in fourth place (23.27) with Walters (Sigma Sport) winning with 22.57.
