Memorial service for two friends killed in road crash
A CONGREGATION of 200 people gathered to pay tribute to two young women a year on from their tragic deaths in a road crash.
Friends and family of Perpetua Muchemi and Tabitha Njenga came together at St Albans Church, in Whitehorse Lane, South Norwood, on Saturday.
The memorial was arranged by Perpetua's dad, Stephen Njoroge, in the church where her funeral was held 12 months earlier.
A road safety campaign was also launched at the service.
Stephen, a church minister, said the memorial brought back the harrowing memories of when he lost his daughter.
"The seat I was in was the same one I sat in for my daughter's funeral," he said.
Perpetua and Tabitha were passengers in a car which crashed into a wall of a home in east London on July 25 last year.
Drink-driver Aloice Mburu was jailed for eight years.
Stephen says he wants to raise teenagers' awareness of the dangers of drink-driving.
"We want to go into churches and schools to educate young people," he said.
"Even if we stop one person dying, that would be enough."
