Mirza's heroics can't prevent Warlingham defeat
ON his first team debut Mansoor Mirza took a fantastic eight wicket haul but Cranleigh still made just enough to deny Warlingham a second win of the season.
Warlingham stuck the visitors in and their openers struggled against Mirza and Ricky Patel on a helpful wicket. They lasted for 50 minutes until Mirza got them both out in successive overs to leave Cranleigh on 35-2.
Rowen Dayal and Mahesh Amin kept up the pressure as Amin had Palmer caught behind, but Ajantha Weerappuli was batting skilfully at the other end.
Warlingham brought back the opening bowlers and although Ricky Patel nipped in with a wicket, it was Mirza who starred taking the last six wickets for 17 in a five-over spell to finish with 8-37.
Weerappuli was sixth out for a brilliant 62 as Cranleigh mustered 143 in 55 overs.
Warlingham began disastrously and were soon 21-5 with Ajaz Patel taking four wickets with his left arm pace bowling.
Mirza, displaying his all-rounder potential, and Darren Phillips steadied the ship. But with the score on 67 Phillips couldn't control a lifting ball from Matt Crump and was caught behind for 18.
Skipper Ash Patel continued his good form of the previous week, taking the attack to the opposition and the home team were in with a real chance when Mirza was unfortunately run out for a well constructed 24 when the score was on 98.
Ash was out soon afterwards for 28 and despite a couple of lusty blows from Amit Patel the task proved too great as Warlingham were all out for 121. Ajaz Patel took 5-46 and Crump 3-48 as Cranleigh won by 22 runs.
